It is a floating hydrophyte plant with floating stems up to 100–150 cm long, without a real root system. It is quite easy to grow in tanks filled with water that does not necessarily have a very acidic pH such as exclusively rain or distilled water. It grows better in ponds, mini ponds or in any case aquatic worlds already rich in life and plants such as water lilies.
The leaves have a lamina divided into thread-like segments with a serrated edge; some of them are transformed into small vesicles (or utricles), about 3 mm in diameter, which act both as tiny traps and as floats.
Unlike other carnivorous species, the plant does not secrete digestive juices, but absorbs organic matter after the prey (usually small crustaceans) has decomposed.
