Gloriosa Superba also called Climbing Lily is a perennial outdoor plant widespread in the tropical forests of Africa and belonging to the Colchicaceae family. As the name suggests, it is a climbing plant that requires supports to sustain its tendrils; it develops from an underground rhizome and its slender green stems can grow up to 2 meters in height. It is a deciduous plant that completely loses its leaves during the winter and then puts them back in spring: these are large, lanceolate in shape and bright green, with elongated ends that tend to curl. Flowering occurs in midsummer producing flowers with a particular cup shape with narrow, long and curved petals that take on a fuchsia color with golden edges. It is precisely this particular flowering that makes the plant very ornamental and in demand, ideal for climbing on trellises and pergolas or for covering walls or gates and given its tropical origin it requires mild temperatures that never fall below 12 degrees and positioning in places where it can receive direct sunlight without excluding planting in partial shade. For luxuriant growth it is necessary to use fertile and well-draining soil to be watered abundantly during the summer months, avoiding any form of stagnation, while in the winter months of vegetative rest watering must be reduced to a minimum to be carried out only when the substrate is completely dry.
